UWI Student Research Council - August 2019
From 20 - 21 August 2019, doctoral students of the 2nd UWI cohort organized a 2 day retreat to work on ideas of collaborations and progress of individual research projects in Gutshaus Buberow. The chosen resort located in a rural area offered a calm and relaxing environment for maximum productivity. Away from the daily research routine, students gathered to focus on the bigger picture regardind 'Urban Water Interfaces' as the connecting scheme of their individual projects. The schedule included multiple discussion sessions based on individual progress and collaborations within common topic groups as well as the research training group.
A variety of other activities were also incoprporated in this retreat, such as a short excursion to IGB facilities in Neuglobsow, where they were introduced to many interesting ongoing projects as well as a visit to the IGB LakeLab at Lake Stechlin. Additionally, a meditation session was organised, to introduce alternative options to avoid excessive stress during PhD life.

Mark Gessner Receives Honorary Doctorate
The Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier has awarded an honorary doctorate to Professor Dr. Mark Gessner for his scientific achievements in limnology. Mark Gessner and his partners in Toulouse can look back on 30 years of collaborative research. Together with other scientists in Europe, they have undertaken pioneering work on leaf litter breakdown in freshwater ecosystems – one of the most important processes in the biosphere, next to the production of plant biomass. Many of his publications on leaf litter in freshwater ecosystems have since become seminal papers in the pertinent literature.
