Mark Gessner Receives Honorary Doctorate

The Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier has awarded an honorary doctorate to Professor Dr. Mark Gessner for his scientific achievements in limnology. Mark Gessner and his partners in Toulouse can look back on 30 years of collaborative research. Together with other scientists in Europe, they have undertaken pioneering work on leaf litter breakdown in freshwater ecosystems – one of the most important processes in the biosphere, next to the production of plant biomass. Many of his publications on leaf litter in freshwater ecosystems have since become seminal papers in the pertinent literature.

Dörthe Tetzlaff elected as Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU)

Prof. Doerthe Tetzlaff, Head of Department “Ecohydrology” at the IGB Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, and Professor in Ecohydrology at the Geography Department, Humboldt University, Berlin, has been elected as a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in 2018 class of Fellows. AGU is the world’s largest learned society for geoscientists with over 62000 members. Fellows are recognized for their scientific eminence and the groundbreaking nature of their contributions. This is a distinguished honour with only 0.1% of AGU membership receiving this recognition in any given year. Professor Tetzlaff was nominated by the Hydrology Section of AGU for her "fundamental insights into physical processes controlling stream flow in headwaters, and their influence on stream chemistry and aquatic ecology.
