Equal opportunities for women and men in pursuing scientific careers is of highest importance, and  UWI is committed to strictly following the Research-Oriented Standards on Gender Equality of the German Research Foundation (DFG 2013). We employ both, (i) instruments of strategic affirmative action to support the careers of female researchers, and (ii) a policy for both genders which support families.

Within UWI different measures are applied to further promote gender equality at the TUB and IGB using special funds provided by the DFG. To support career development of female scientists within UWI we support female doctoral students by funding their participation in various special events for women in science and practice e.g. participation in gender sensitive conferences and courses. In addition to measures offered by TUB and IGB, UWI organises its own gender course series, which should be attended by UWI female doctoral students and UWI female kollegiates. The UWI gender courses cover topics such as time managemet, self-organisation, presentation techniques, methods how to negotiate successfully, as well as insights into project management and leadership techniques. Additionally, individual coaching sessions can be funded for interested female doctoral students. Complementing to the courses, designated speakers and thesis supervisors mentor and advise female doctoral students on career possibilities in science and academia, especially in the final phase of their doctoral theses. Successful female scientists (role models) are invited through the visiting scientists programme (see our News and events section) and are members of the EAB.

To support compatibility of work and family commitments home office spaces can be funded for female and male UWI doctoral students and UWI researchers with young children. In addition, UWI supports doctoral students with young children with the possibility of flexible working hours as well as the option to work from a home office from time to time. The UWI lectures, especially the core courses and lectures given by guests and visiting scientists as well as all the UWI meetings (such as the steering committee and BoS) are generally taking place at family-friendly times, whenever possible.
