Aquifers and sediments
Aquifers and sediments form an interface between urban water bodies and the subsurface and through removal / degradation of contaminants such as micropollutants act as dynamic sinks and sources for urban water and matter fluxes in the hyporheic zone and during bank filtration (blue fluxes). Their ecological functions tend to be strongly impaired by technical systems and management measures and they are likely to be further modified by climate change.
