Sewer systems
Sewer systems are characterised by anaerobic conditions leading to sulfide formation, emission of hydrogen sulphide from (waste)water into the gas phase, subsequent oxidation to sulphuric acid and hence corrosion at the interface between the gas and the building materials (e.g. concrete), and by formation and emission of greenhouse gases and microbial transformations in biofilms at the sewer wall.
